Verify a scientific article by DOI
A DOI is a persistent identifier for a digital object, but a DOI string printed on a page is not proof by itself. A useful check establishes whether it is registered, where it resolves and whether the registered record agrees with the uploaded document.
Three DOI verification steps
First, the string is normalised and checked for common transcription errors. It is then resolved through DOI Foundation infrastructure. Finally, the returned metadata is compared with title, authors, journal, year and pagination. A working link does not cancel material differences.
Why a DOI may not open
Possible causes include a typo, delayed updates, an incorrect destination maintained by the publisher, a retired website or a temporary network failure. A failed redirect and an unregistered DOI therefore receive different findings.
What a DOI does not establish
DOI registration does not assess research quality, peer review, Scopus or Web of Science indexing, or the integrity of every PDF page. Those matters require separate evidence.
