How to verify a patent by number
Understand the number before searching. The country code and publication-kind code matter, while an application number may differ from the granted patent. Searching bare digits can lead to an unrelated record.
Parse the number
WO denotes an international PCT publication, while EP concerns a European application or patent. Preserve the letter kind code. When a PDF contains several numbers, use the nearby label to identify the role of each one.
Use the appropriate register
PATENTSCOPE supports international publications and European Patent Register covers EPO procedures. Espacenet helps inspect patent families and bibliography. Compare title, applicant, inventors, dates and priority.
Separate a record from a live right
Publication does not establish grant or continued protection. Read legal status in the official register for the relevant jurisdiction; an aggregator may lag behind. A legal decision requires professional review.
Example
WO 2024/123456 A1 identifies an international application publication, not automatically a granted patent. Search it in PATENTSCOPE, retain the A1 kind code and compare applicant, inventors, dates and priority. Publication alone cannot establish that a right was granted and remains in force in a particular country.
