How to verify a decision to grant a patent
A grant decision and a patent certificate belong to different procedural stages. A decision may confirm the office’s outcome before a final publication number or complete information about an enforceable right becomes available.
Extract the decision details
Record the office, application number, decision date, subject title, applicant and representative. Check a QR code or electronic signature only through the office’s official verification address when such a service exists.
Locate the connected procedure
Search the official file record by application number and compare applicant, title and dates. If a granted-patent number later appears, the connection should be visible in the procedural history or an official bulletin.
Allow for the time gap
A period between decision and publication is normal. Failure to find a grant on the decision date does not disprove it. A different office, conflicting applicant or impossible chronology, however, needs explanation.
Example
A decision is dated 2 April and the next official bulletin is published on 20 April. Absence of a granted-patent record on 2 April does not by itself disprove the decision because publication may not yet have occurred. A different applicant, incompatible application number or impossible chronology would be material conflicts.
